Founder & Head Coach, Summit School of Chess
As a National Master and the driving force behind the Summit School of Chess, Jesse Cohen has dedicated his career to demystifying the game of chess and using it as a powerful tool for cognitive and personal development. With a professional coaching tenure spanning over 15 years, Jesse has helped hundreds of students across Colorado bridge the gap between casual play and competitive mastery.
Jesse’s teaching philosophy goes beyond the board. He believes that chess is a rigorous mental discipline that fosters critical thinking, patience, and resilience—skills that students carry with them into the classroom and beyond. Whether he is working with absolute beginners or mentoring tournament-bound students, Jesse specializes in personalized instruction that adapts to every child’s unique learning style.
His commitment to scholastic chess has made the Summit School of Chess the premier provider of chess education in the Greater Denver and Colorado Springs areas. Jesse is passionate about cultivating an environment where every student, regardless of skill level, can develop the strategic foresight and confidence needed to succeed
We are proud to feature Daniel Avery as a lead coach for this summer’s camp. A fixture in the Colorado Springs chess community for decades, Daniel brings a unique perspective to the board that combines high-level competitive experience with the patience and clarity of a seasoned educator.
Outside of his work with our students, Daniel has served the Colorado Springs community as a long-time teacher in the D20 School District. This dual background is what sets his coaching apart; he doesn’t just teach chess—he teaches students how to learn. Whether he is explaining complex endgame maneuvers or helping a camper build the resilience needed to bounce back from a tough match, Daniel uses his decades of classroom and competitive experience to create a supportive, encouraging environment where every student can find their stride.
We are thrilled to welcome Journay Clinch to the Summit School of Chess coaching team for our Summer Chess Camp.
Journay brings a unique, student-centered approach to chess instruction, combining a passion for youth development with a deep understanding of psychological science. Currently pursuing her Master of Psychological Science at UCCS, Journay leverages her extensive background as a Registered Behavior Technician and K-12 educator to foster supportive, engaging, and growth-oriented learning environments.
Her expertise in behavior observation and data-driven instruction allows her to adapt coaching styles to meet the individual needs of every student. We are excited for our campers to benefit from her patience, strategic mindset, and proven commitment to student success.
