With the upcoming World Chess Championship match between reigning champion Ding Liren and his young challenger Gukesh just around the corner, the chess world is abuzz with anticipation. Ding Liren, despite being the current World Champion, is struggling to find his form, having dropped out of the top 20 in live ratings and not having won a classical game in months. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old Gukesh, fresh off a phenomenal performance at the Olympiad, is on a meteoric rise, already ranked No. 5 in the world and knocking on the door of the elite 2800 club.

This intriguing David-versus-Goliath narrative, however, might not be as straightforward as many are predicting. Hungarian Grandmaster Richard Rapport, who served as Ding’s second during his victorious 2023 match against Ian Nepomniachtchi, offers a unique perspective on the situation. According to Rapport, while Gukesh’s current form makes him the favorite, the match could still surprise everyone, especially with Ding Liren’s unpredictable resilience.

Ding Liren: A Champion Tested by Adversity

Ding Liren’s journey to the top wasn’t without challenges. His 2023 World Championship match against Nepomniachtchi showcased not just his strategic prowess but also his remarkable mental fortitude. Throughout the match, Ding was emotionally vulnerable, often revealing his inner struggles during post-game interviews. He was never ahead on the scoreboard until the very last moment when he secured the title in a nail-biting tiebreak.

Rapport, who provided both strategic guidance and emotional support during that match, describes the experience as “weirdly draining” but also deeply fulfilling. He praises Ding’s resilience, noting that few could have pulled off such a comeback under immense pressure. Ding’s journey wasn’t just about technical skills; it was a testament to his character and his ability to bounce back when the odds were against him, showcasing what it takes in befriending adversity.

Despite his current slump, Rapport believes that Ding’s previous experiences could play a crucial role in the upcoming match against Gukesh. “How he will play the match is going to be very different from how he plays these tournaments,” Rapport said, hinting at a tactical and psychological depth that could catch Gukesh off guard.

Gukesh: The New Rising Star

On the other side of the board stands Gukesh, a prodigy with an impressive track record. At just 18, Gukesh’s performance at the Olympiad was nothing short of spectacular, leading his team to gold with a near-perfect score. His ascent in the chess world has been swift, and his aggressive playing style and fearless attitude have captured the imagination of fans worldwide. His match against Ding Liren will be a pivotal moment in his career.

However, Gukesh’s inexperience in a World Championship setting could be a critical factor. While Gukesh is undoubtedly in great form, playing in a World Championship match comes with pressures unlike any other event. The mental and emotional toll of competing on such a grand stage is something that can’t be easily measured or predicted.

The Unpredictability of Chess

As Rapport points out, this match is likely to be far more competitive than many expect. Both Ding and Gukesh bring distinct strengths to the board—Ding with his experience and resilience, and Gukesh with his youthful energy and recent successes. The clash of styles, combined with the high stakes, promises a match filled with surprises. Ding Liren’s ability to tackle unexpected challenges could be a deciding factor.

Rapport’s own recollections of Ding’s triumph underscore the unpredictable nature of chess at this level. It’s not just about who is playing better at the moment but also about who can handle the pressure, make fewer mistakes, and seize the critical moments. Ding’s ability to play with calm under pressure, as seen in his previous match, could be his ace in the hole against a young and hungry challenger.

Conclusion

The Ding-Gukesh match is not just a battle of skills but a contest of nerves, character, and resilience. While Gukesh is riding a wave of momentum, Ding Liren’s experience as a champion under fire should not be underestimated. For fans of the game, this match promises to be a thrilling display of chess at the highest level, with twists and turns that could redefine the narrative of both players’ careers.

As the chess world waits with bated breath, one thing is certain: this will be a showdown for the ages, reminding us all why the World Championship remains the pinnacle of the sport. Let the games begin!

  1. The first game will be very crucial. If Gukesh wins the first game, it’s all over for Ding. If it’s a draw, then depends on who goes one up first. But if ding wins first, he has got his rhythm back and Less of cakewalk for Gukesh. First Gukesh has to equalize, and then who forges ahead will have the upper hand to win the championship. We’ll see how this unfold.

    1. I’m greatly looking forward to this match. It’s going to be intense and it’s a mistake that the chess world continues to underestimate Ding, when he proves himself time and again.

Secretly, I’ll be happy whoever wins but it’ll be monumental if Gukesh takes it!
