At Summit School of Chess, we love seeing our brilliant young minds showcase their creativity both on and off the board! Our students across the Greater Denver area brought incredible imagination to this year’s Halloween costume contest. They blended clever chess themes with spooky season fun. As a result, we are excited to highlight our Denver kids chess Halloween winners.
Choosing just three winners was a tough match. However, after a deep tactical review, here are our champions for this year’s spooky showdown:
🥇 1st Place: Chester Cheeto with a Custom Prop
- The Costume: A bright, fun, and instantly recognizable Chester Cheeto lounge suit.
- The Winning Move: What pushed this costume to 1st place was the brilliant custom prop—a handcrafted, giant painted chess pawn! In addition, combining snack-time fun with chess strategy proved to be a masterclass in creativity.
🥈 2nd Place: The Literal Knight’s Driveway Attack
- The Costume: A fully armored medieval knight complete with a hand-painted shield and sword.
- The Winning Move: Taking tactical themes to heart, this student staged a literal driveway chess board game. Then they executed a surprise chess knight attack on their sibling (disguised as an orange dinosaur)! Talk about bringing board games to life.
🥉 3rd Place: Harry Potter & Hedwig Chess Masters
- The Costume: Handcrafted costumes featured everyone’s favorite wizard, Harry Potter (complete with a lightning scar and Hogwarts scarf). Alongside this, there was a gorgeous, handmade fluffy white Hedwig owl mask and feather cape.
- The Winning Move: These students set up a real chess board outdoors among the autumn leaves to reenact Wizard’s Chess. Ultimately, this proved that concentration and magic go hand in hand.
A Note from National Chess Master Jesse Cohen: “Chess teaches children abstract concepts of planning, analysis, and strategy. Seeing our students channel that same imaginative problem-solving into their Halloween costumes is wonderful. Congratulations to our winners and all who participated!”
